Most of the excessive calories come from a very small group of offenders --- fried food, sugar (soda!!!!!!!!!!), mayo/dressing/sauce, and desserts.

Eliminate (or moderate) those, and you can "magically" lose pounds.

Even @ fast-food places (or BWW, Chili's, Applebee's), it's almost impossible to go wrong with grilled chicken or fish. But people get the fried chicken, and suddenly a 600-calorie entree becomes 1,500 calories.
